D.O. Valencia
The winemaking tradition in the province of Valencia is based in an area of old farming lands around the third largest city in Spain.
This designation covers over 19,000 hectares of vineyards. The red, rosé, white, sweet, sparkling liquors and sparkling aromatics in this Designation are the result of different grape varieties grown in four sub-areas. Each of these wines are produced in a different and peculiar way. Due to the tradition of exportation in the region, production is mainly directed to international markets, so most of their wines are not yet well known in the national market.

HISTORYValencia is one of the most traditional wine growing regions of Spain, as there are various archaeological sites in the area, like the Neolithic tombs, where there has been traces of grapes found. The Valencian Arnau de Vilanova wrote one of the first treaties of wine in Spain in the thirteenth century. In the eighteenth century, most of the vineyards were in the Valencian coast, but gradually they gained terrain in the inland area strating from the lands of Upper Turia. The splendid location of Valencia, with its port facing the Mediterranean, has allowed wine exportation for over centuries, the same happens with their citruses. However, some of the biggest wineries are beginning to move to the outskirts of the city, some because they prefer to and others as required by the reconstruction of the port area, the point of origin of many of the wineries. |

LOCATIONSThe vineyards are located in the province of Valencia, on the outskirts of the city in the northeast and south. Most about 30 kilometers inland. There are four areas of cultivation. The north and center of the province, Valentino, the largest area of all, where vines slowly ascend from the coastal plain to the inland. This area is divided into three geographically distinct areas: Cheste and Marquess, with an altitude of 175-178 meters, Campos de Liria, at 278 meters, where the soils are similar to those found in lower altitudes and highlands, and Serranía with an altitude of 550 meters. The second subarea is Alto Turia and it is located in the northwest of the province, at 625 meters above sea level. It has sandy soils. The third subarea is Moscatel de Valencia, located in the center of the province, rising from sea level up to 100 meters. Finally, Clariano lies south of Valencia, separated from the other three sub-areas and bordering the cities of Játiva and Gandia. |
