HISTORYThe tradition of wine growing in Madrid area dates back to the thirteenth century, a period in which the reds from this area were already recognized for their robustness. For many centuries, the wine region was known as "Tierra de Madrid". The DO Wines of Madrid began to take shape in 1982 but was not effective until late 1990. A strong structural change in the wine industry led this province to move from an anonymity to have a growing presence in the market. |

DENOMINATION OF ORIGINThe DO Vinos de Madrid is located south of the community, forming a semicircle in the southern part of the capital. There are almost 8,000 hectares of vineyards which are divided into three sub-areas: Arganda, Navalcarnero and San Martin de Valdeiglesias being Arganda the sub-area with more surface of vineyards planted. The DO Wines of Madrid, established in 1990 and headquartered in Madrid, certifies that these wines have been produced in the region of Madrid and have passed the appropriate quality controls. The council responsible for setting and monitoring these quality controls is the "Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen "Vinos de Madrid". Furthermore, this Council is also responsible for promoting the quality of these wines.

LOCATIONSThere are three sub-areas in the DO Wines from Madrid: sub-area "Arganda del Rey", sub-area "Navalcarnero" and sub-area "San Martin de Valdeiglesias". The sub-area Arganda del Rey, located in the southeast of Madrid, includes more municipalities and a higher productivity. Most of the production is focused on young reds, rosés (Navalcarnero sub-area) and whites, some of these excellent for aging (especially in the sub-area of Arganda). |
