Olive oil tourism, or “oleotourism” in Mallorca: the art of nature

Olive oil tourism, or “oleotourism” in Mallorca: the art of nature On the island of Mallorca, nature has carved over the centuries trunks of olive trees to turn them into true works of art. The olive groves and fruit, the oil of Mallorca, orchestrate a spectacular way to enjoy the island, a new way to approach Mallorca.

The “oleotourism” allows visitors to enter the art of nature through numerous recreational activities in a unique magic environment of centenarians olive groves, mills that are now museum pieces and dishes that the oil of Mallorca can make with a differentiated and exclusive flavor.

The “Olivo de Cort”, in the Town Hall Square in Palma, “Es Camel”, in camí of Muleta, Sa Madonna des Barranc, in the ravines of Biniaraix or Na Flamarades, on the estate Son Brull, are among the most prominent examples of olive in Mallorca, which contemplation deserves unique routes by the municipalities of the island. In their trunks can be found all the fantasy of a modeling ably done by Mother Nature capable of displaying a hell of flames that evokes the own Dante, a snake that strangles its prey or a Chinese dragon preparing his attack.

These unique pieces can be found in some of the most recognized “oleotouristic” routes on the island. There, tourists can enjoy walks through forest roads and trails that enter ourselves into a magical world, almost mythological, olive groves of great beauty as that shown by "El Camí de la Muleta." You can also let yourself be seduced by the sublime olive mountain, trees with superb form, surrounded by large engineering samples of the traditional 'dry stone' and the reservoir of Cúber on a route by the Barranc de Biniaraix.

These “oleotouristic” excursions count in their unmatched trail with the best sea views, the enjoyment of the most emblematic Mallorcan green landscapes and oil mills in which to rest and enjoy the best dishes prepared with oil of Mallorca that can be offered throughout the island. These mills produce oil, in most cases, by traditional handicraft method, and travelers that include them in their path, besides the beauty of farms and buildings and their tasty samplings, may recreate, between November and January, in the process of preparing this golden liquid that supports a very special gastronomy of special sensations.

Among the most emblematic oil mills, there is Es Verger in Esporles, where in addition to oil, they elaborate ecologic wines "Ses Marjales" and "Els Rojals", or Aubocassa, located in a building from 13th century in Manacor, with a hermitage and stables of Gothic style, surrounded by twenty hectares of olive trees.

Visitors interested in deepening to their highest point in all the possibilities of “oleotourism” in Mallorca have the opportunity to enjoy accommodations and restaurants that have mills integrated, as Son Brull Hotel, or surrounded by olive groves and accompanied by oil mills, as of Muleta Ca S'Hereu or Read's Hotel.

Among the best places to enjoy the Mallorcan cuisine, we recommend Ca N'Arabi, in Binissalem, El Olivo, in Deiá, and Brens D'Avall, in the town of Soller. Although the local cuisine has erected the extra virgin olive oil as its main champion, you can not miss the opportunity to enjoy its many other products with Protected Designation of Origin, as cheeses Mahon-Menorca, or Geographical Designations as the “Sobrassada” and “Ensaimada” of Mallorca, the Herbs of Ibiza or wines from Binissalem and Pla i Llevant, among many other products of recognized standing and quality.
