CHEESE AND WINE, THE IDEAL BINOMIAL IN THE STREETS DE TRUJILLO

Trujillo is one of the most emblematic localities of Extremadura for its rich prehistoric, pre-Roman and Muslim legacy. And every year, when spring arrives, the city where the conqueror of Peru, Francisco Pizarro, was born, opens its doors to the lovers of gastronomy who go to enjoy the popular Fair of Cheese. This tradition is very rooted in the zone since one should not forget that Trujillo was already an important cheese centre in medieval time, that acquired a special trend after 15th century due to its strategic geographic location.

The Fair of the Cheese of Trujillo, which is celebrated annually at the end of April since 1986, can be considered as one of the most important of Europe in this sector, with more than 6,000 meters of exhibition, installed in the monumental main square of the locality. In its hundred of exhibitors they agglutinate more than 300 different varieties of handmade cheese, most of them with denomination of origin.

In the event, 90 percent of the Spanish independent communities are represented and several regions of Portugal that give and present to the visitors their best cheeses.

And nothing better than to accompany cheese in a luminous day of spring than a good wine. Thus, thanks to a comfortable system of tickets, the visitors can taste all the cheeses that they wish, at the same time that they enjoy a delicious red wine from Extremadura , a wine from the Designation of Origin "Ribera del Guadiana". In addition, the event allows tourists, to the possibility of buying the cheeses that they have liked most in the own stands.

If, on the contrary, you prefer to let yourself guide by the advice of an expert, there is a contest every year that takes place simultaneously to the celebration of the fair, and that chooses the best cheeses exhibited, within each category: goat and sheep in their two versions of hard and soft paste. A system that manages substantially to elevate the sales of the winning cheeses.

And as complement to the fair, the city offers infinite possibilities and attractions to the visitor. One of most attractive is the Church of Santa Maria la Mayor. It was constructed in the 13th century, after the conquest of the city, possibly on one of the Arab mosques that existed in Trujillo. The church conserves Romanics and Gothic elements, but it underwent an important restoration in the 16th century. In the interior it excels the greater gothic altarpiece, executed in the studio of Fernando Gallego, and the choir.

It is also advisable to visit the pictorial exhibitions of the conventual's of San Francisco and in the palace of San Carlos, visit any of its palaces, to cross its narrow streets paved with stones until arrive to its castle. And if there is some energy left, nothing better than "to climb" up the hill of Cabezo de Zorro, from where the best view is perceived.
