Concurrent with the possibility of using the name "Mallorca" in the labels of "Vinos de la tierra", the wines produced in the island with the right of using this mentioned denomination, the grape growers of the zone try to impel Wine Tourism in the Balearic islands.
The new norm will allow the wine sector to incorporate to the labels of all the wines of the island with some protected indication, the name "Mallorca", which until now were only exclusive of wines elaborated in the region of Binissalem and Pla i Llevant. A normative change that tries that the citizens from the rest of Spain and the world identify the kindness of these wines, which obtained in several occasions the grade of "excellent".
The wine sector of Mallorca tries to show tourists that the enchantment of the island not only fits to the traditional "Sun and beach" but that there can be more alternatives complementary to this offer. The first step has been taken by nine wine cellar owners who have elaborated the publication of the book "Mallorca, isla del vino", an initiative that tries to present the wine tradition through an historical route by the main wineries of the island. It is precise to remember that until hardly a century ago, wine was the first industry of Mallorca, with a production of 75 million litters of wine, of which more than 50 million were destined abroad. Numbers which contrast with the present production, that occupies 2,000 hectares of the most Eastern island of Spain, and that only ascends to 4.5 million litters.
The nine companies that have published this book, amongst which are the famous José L Ferrer, Vins Nadal or Son Bordils, have created through their pages a guide of visit of their facilities. The employees of these "temples of wine" will specialize in several languages in showing the wineries to the tourists and initiate them in the tasting of wines.
The east zone of this island that includes the Denomination of Origin (D.O.) Pla i Llevant, is one of the territories of Mallorca with more wine tradition, since the vine is cultivated in this land since Roman domination. They mainly cultivate the native variety "Manto Negro" and to French varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir.
From the DO Pla I Llevant, white wines of grape Chardonnay are well recognised, with very marked aromas of fruit and the red ones, characterised by their intensity of colour and their particular aroma.
The other favourite area for the culture of the grapevine is the geographic centre of the island, place in which grapes used in the elaboration of wines from the DO Binissalem are cultivated. It is a landscape of smooth relief that favours the development and the balanced maturation of the fruits of the native varieties "Manto Negro" and "Callet" (red varieties) and "Moll" (white), basis of its traditional grape growing and its personality and style. Amongst the wines of the zone, the reds of "Manto Negro" are those that more fame have reached. They are substantial and elegant wines that present conditions for ageing in oak. However, rosé and white wines, elaborated with modern technology, justify sufficient merits as to pleasantly surprise the good enthusiasts to quality wines.
